ABOUT

WHERE WE COME FROM

To fully appreciate the essence of Thebe, we have to begin at its origins and foundation to identify some of its key birthmarks that, taken together with other foundation stones that were laid at its inception, tell us who Thebe is, its reason for being, how it came about and some of the principles accompanied by moral obligations that underlie the foundation and operations of Thebe, which continue to shape its identity and character.

WHO WE ARE

We are an African company that came into being shortly before South Africa’s formal political transition to democracy, setting new norms and changing the face of business by establishing a socially embedded company that uses its business success to transform lives, and make a difference in our communities.

Our business comprises three streams.

The first stream is an integrated energy and resources business that focuses on various energy products (oil, chemicals, gas, power, water and energy commodities). Our businesses range from exploration and production/manufacturing to distribution.

The second stream is a portfolio of businesses that constitute the services industry. This business stream comprises financial solutions, logistics services and media platforms. It creates content that seeks to meet the needs of the emerging middle class and businesses.

The third stream consists of a range of community development and transformation services that we offer to local communities at no cost to them. These contribute to the improvement of the social and enterprise ecology of local communities, and to transforming lives

“We have been on a continuous journey with Thebe since 2010 and there have been numerous milestones that we have achieved and are continuing to achieve.”

Neo Lethea, Dicky’s Cakes (Thebe Foundation, enterprise development beneficiary)

“Thebe have provided us with financial, technical and moral support in meeting the strenuous business challenges as we have grown from a small start-up business to one that has carved an important niche in a highly competitive environment.”

Rohan Laird & Mangaliso Mahlaba, Thebe YA Bophela

The very first public communication by Thebe Investment Corporation in 1992, stated:

True to the African idiom, “No matter how far a stream flows, it never forgets its source”, Thebe remains focused on it’s primary reason to exist: TO BUILD COMMUNITIES.

Although the company was established by some of the ANC’s most powerful leaders, with the aim of empowering previously disenfranchised individuals and communities, its mandate was very clear from the start: TIC was, and still is, in the business of business and not in the business of politics.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE

Thebe Investment Corporation is a combination of legacy, sound business, community building and a focus on Africa.
